Celebrating 49 Years

A Memphis Tradition on the Mississippi

Since 1977, Ski Freeze has brought together daring skiers, passionate supporters, and the Memphis community for a thrilling New Year’s Day event raising funds for the Dream Factory of Memphis and creating lifelong memories.

Celebrating 49 Years of Making a Splash for a Cause

Started from a dare…

The Ski Freeze was dreamed up 49 years ago on a dare (and winter boredom) from some of the founding members of the River City Ski Club. It was initially held on Kilowatt Lake in North Memphis. Later, it moved to the Wolf River channel between Mud Island and the Cobblestones. Only once did the Ski Freeze not take place exactly on New Year’s Day, when the water had iced over in Wolf River. It was subsequently moved to a private lake in February.

Over the years, Ski Freeze has raised over $500,000 for the Dream Factory.

After a few years, the River Ski Club decided to have their crazy antics become a community oriented event and started each year to raise funds for non-profits. In 1988, they chose the Dream Factory of Memphis as their charity of choice and it has remained that way ever since. The Dream Factory of Memphis is a non-profit, 100% volunteer organization that grants Dreams to critically and chronically ill children ages three through eighteen. In 2007, the River City Ski Club was closed. Fortunately, the Collierville Ski Club was formed that same year and has been the sponsor and key organizer of this event. .

Over the years, Ski Freeze has raised over $500,000 for the Dream Factory. Each year, the Dream Factory selects a child to receive their dream from the funds raised at this event. The event is open to the public. If you are a skier or not, we invite you to come down and be a part of the day’s activities. Whether you want to cheer on the participants, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate, or take part in our raffle to win some great items, there is something for everyone to do.

Stories That Warm the Heart

Each New Year’s Day, the banks of the Mississippi come alive with laughter, cheers, and unforgettable memories. Participants recall the thrill of their first icy plunge, often describing the camaraderie and encouragement that makes Ski Freeze truly special.

Organizers share how the event has grown from a handful of daring friends into a cherished Memphis tradition, uniting the community for an incredible cause. “Seeing everyone come together—rain or shine, frost or fog—reminds us why we do this,” says a longtime volunteer.

Dream Factory recipients and their families light up the day with gratitude and inspiration. “The support we received gave us hope and happiness we never expected. Ski Freeze isn’t just an event—it’s a family,” shares one grateful parent. These powerful moments fuel the spirit of giving year after year, making every splash count.
